The medieval period introduced Latin Christian rule that fundamentally altered the island's social structure. Richard I of England conquered Cyprus in May 1191 during the Third Crusade, defeating the Byzantine usurper Isaac Komnenos who had declared himself emperor in 1184. Richard sold the island to the Knights Templar for 100,000 bezants, but when the Templars could not control local resistance, he transferred ownership to Guy de Lusignan, the deposed King of Jerusalem, in 1192. Famagusta, defended by Venetian commander Marcantonio Bragadin with approximately 8,000 troops, withstood siege from September 1570 until August 1, 1571, enduring over 1,000 artillery bombardments daily during the final months. After negotiating surrender terms guaranteeing safe passage, Ottoman forces reneged, and Bragadin was flayed alive on August 17, 1571. Britain assumed administration of Cyprus on July 12, 1878, while Cyprus technically remained Ottoman territory until formal British annexation on November 5, 1914, following Ottoman entry into World War I. Turkish Cypriot opposition to enosis crystallized in the formation of the Turkish Resistance Organization, known by its Turkish acronym TMT, in 1958. TMT leader Rauf Denktaş advocated taksim, partition, as the alternative to union with Greece, arguing that Turkish Cypriots required either continuation of British rule or division of the island to maintain security. Violence between Greek and Turkish Cypriots escalated during summer 1958, with clashes in Nicosia on June 7 killing eight and displacing approximately 300 Turkish Cypriots from mixed neighborhoods. The Zurich Agreement of February 11, 1959, negotiated between Greece, Turkey, and Britain with minimal Cypriot participation, established the framework for independence. The London Conference of February 19, 1959, finalized constitutional arrangements including a Greek Cypriot president, Turkish Cypriot vice president, and a 70 to 30 representation ratio in the legislature and civil service. Greece, Turkey, and Britain became guarantor powers under the Treaty of Guarantee, which specifically prohibited either enosis or taksim and granted each guarantor the right to take action to restore the constitutional order.
